Walk and Talk Therapy
Walk and Talk therapy is a form of integrative mental health that takes place outdoors, typically in a natural setting like a park or greenway, rather than in a traditional office or virtually. It is a beautiful way to harness and make the most of the mind-body connection.
Why walk and talk therapy?
Bilateral brain stimulation - When both sides of the brain are stimulated simultaneously, clients become more open-minded and are better equipped to consider new approaches to old problems.
Connection - Walking and talking nurtures connections between people, allowing the brain and heart to feel a sense of belonging and safety.
Mood Improvement - Natural sunlight increases vitamin D production in the body which decreases anxiety, depression, and other mood disorder symptoms.
Stress Reduction - Spending time in nature has been show to lower blood pressure and cortisol levels while enhancing cognitive functions like attention, concentration, and memory.
Who is a good fit for walk and talk therapy?
People who have trouble sitting still.
People who are otherwise uncomfortable with traditional talk therapy.
People who would like to incorporate more movement into their day.
What should I wear?
Comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing.
Shoes that are suitable for walking. Not flip flops.
You’ll also want to bring a water bottle.
What about confidentiality?
In Walk and Talk therapy, the outdoors is our meeting place which means we may see, and even encounter people, one or both of us know. While I won’t pretend that we’re not there together, I will not tell anyone that we’re in a therapy session. In most cases, I will smile or nod in acknowledgment of the person and keep walking. In the event that they attempt to start a conversation, I will politely tell them that I’ll be in contact with them later on. We will discuss how to handle situations in which you see/encounter someone you know to ensure that we have a plan that makes you feel safe and confident.
